Review of The Searchers (1956) by Caleb M — 18 Feb 2011
A visually striking adventure with great thrills, scares, laughs and heartbreak. One of the most morally complex adventure tales I've seen. What are these men searching for? A lost girl, or a way of justifying their way of life? Wayne's Ethan is fascinating; he hates the Comanches, yet he follows many of their customs when desecrating their dead or attacking their leaders.
The Searchers is one hell of a film, and it's got a bit of everything; from grand vistas, to sweet first kisses; slapstick humor and complex historical moral issues.
