Review of The Homesman (2014) by Andre S — 10 Jan 2015
This is an excellent drama, one that reflects the harsh reality of life on the prairie. It features excellent performances by the two main characters. Critics can quibble with the portrayal of mental illness, but it's full of characterizations and portrayals that reminded my of Willa Cather's "My Antonia," material that the descendants of the prairie settlers will tell you ring very true.
I give it five stars for the non-cliched script, the cinematography, the acting, and for the courage of all involved, especially Tommie Lee Jones, to take on such difficult subject matter. It is a very important contribution to the story of the American settlers who braved the plains, and all they had to endure.
I consider it a must see for anyone interested in American character and history.
