Review of The Happiness of the Katakuris (2002) by Jason C — 27 Jul 2007
One of the best Japanese movies ever made, and a personal favourite of mine. Trying to define a genre for this movie is impossible as it will at one point or another include it. I will mention however that it has zombies and some song-and-dance routines. Takashi Miike really hasn'y made a truely 'disappointing' film and this is one of the highlights of all his works to date. The directing is stylish, the cast are all on a high par of excellence and it has such a dark sense on humour in places it actually feels reinicsent of low-budget horror-comedy flicks from the 80's.
It can be a little confusing if you don't pay attention, but then again that's half the joy of Japanese films.
I should really have just said brilliant, but there you go, I like it that much.
