Review of The Broadway Melody (1929) by Calvin C — 06 Mar 2011
The very first sound pictures and the first movie musical. Winner Best Picture 1929, this is a very dated movie, where you can obviously see that the filmmakers where still new to the idea of sound, camera work, dialogue, and storytelling. You can see that they were still using some silent era techniques such as cue cards and awkward moment of silences that looks silly in a sound picture. If you compare it to today's musicals, it stinks, but if you're able to time warp your way back to 1929, you can guess how amazing this movie was at that time. For that reason, I enjoyed it for what it was.
Grade: B.
