Review of The Blue Angel (1930) by Darren S — 06 Jun 2008
The debut of Marlene Dietrich on film, as well as the song for which she would become reknown, 'Falling in Love (Again)'. This German film from 1930 is where the legend began.
Lola (Dietrict) is a saucy cabaret performer at The Blue Angel, for whom many man fall. Respected Professor (Emil Jannings), in trying to chase is students out of the club and away from the distraction Lola provides to them, himself falls for this Siren's song. His decline from bourgeois respectability to clown (literally) is tragic, but ultimately an example of his own foolishness.
Not the best quality film -- it was 1930 after all -- but a fantastic story that kind of sets the tone for Germany at the time as well.
