Review of Stonewall (2015) by Jake W — 22 Jun 2016
Looking at Stonewall by itself, it is a decent film that was actually quite enjoyable. It is neither great or horrible. The characters were very well written and you really got invested in their lives, and the film accurately portrayed the struggles of what the LGBT community went through and still go through today, particularly homeless LGBT youth.
The one negative part of this film is the lack of historical accuracy of the Stonewall Rebellion events. This film erased the LGBT people of color who lead the actual rebellion and replaced it with a "straight-friendly" white boy.
It is because of this that you must not use this film as a symbol and representation of our history, and instead just a simple piece of entertainment. I would never use this film as a means to accurately portray the Stonewall rebellion, but just as a film to watch for fun or to reflect upon the struggles LGBT people go through.
