Review of Somewhere (2010) by Omar L — 23 May 2011
This movie has got a lot of criticism for being pretentious and out of touch and for being a film about nothing. I would argue that it has a lot to grab a hold of. I enjoy Sophia Coppola's vision and the way she tells her story here.
It's slow and believable and doesn't try to do too much or become something more than what it is. Here's a story of a movie star who's a bit jaded and seems to be desensitized to his surroundings.
His world lacks subtlety with woman throwing themselves at him and fine luxuries at his fingertips. He's out of touch with the world around him and with himself until his daughter comes into the picture.
I love the slow turn the story takes with the characters once they spend time together. It's beautiful to look at. I enjoyed this slow stylish movie from Ms. Coppola. 8/10 from me.
