Michael douglas portrays the perfect anti-hero---a man who spirals into destructive and self-destructive behaviours as he becomes increasingly aware of the incidental and temporary nature of his existence.
as compulsive as he is, as devoid of control as he is, you SO know he goes after the co-ed in the end---he simply can't help himself.
