Review of Queen of Katwe (2016) by Brett W — 27 Sep 2016
I had a chance to see an advanced screening of this movie - with no foreknowledge of the movie at all beyond it being a Disney production - and fully expected a comedy or sugar-coated movie about Africa.
Instead, it was a gritty, raw, real movie that inspires and uplifts the viewer, even as the imagery on the screen is so horrific and sad. It's a movie I'd like for my kids to see - a reminder of just how lucky we have it as residents of the west.
Even the poorest in the west don't have to live in the squalor that so many in the poorest nations do. We have so much to be grateful for. But it's more than that. It's also a reminder of how important it is to nurture real talent when we're lucky enough to come across it - to recognize and lift up diamonds in the rough.
