Review of Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman (2005) by Stephen B — 31 Dec 2007
Great character study. The film follows a man following in his father's footsteps as a hangman. He shows great skill and talent in the profession and receives much praise from his professional peers.
He tries to keep this job a secret and when his identity is made public, it becomes more difficult to distance himself from his work. The morality issues of capital punishment are touched on many issues and I don't feel it tried to make a judgement as a film.
It did show the destruction the executioner underwent but I still feel the filmmaker wanted to remain simply an observer. It was very well done. I had my doubts before watching it and now I'm very glad I watched it.
.. it has such a great performance by Timothy Spall.
