Review of McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) by John E — 11 Oct 2007
My favortie Altman film. Strangely moving account of a small-time gambler's doomed attempt to better himself by starting a brothel. He falls for the emotionally unavailable, opium-addicted Madam, played perfectly by Julie Christie.
Leonard Cohen's soundtrack perfectly mirrors the melancholy mood. Beatty, Christie and the whole cast shine and the cinematography captures both the ugliness and beauty of frontier life. A film to savor, it repays repeated viewings.
