Review of Kwaidan (1965) by Suzanne F — 17 Jun 2007
This movie is interesting... it definitely gives you an insight into Japanese supernatural films and what is considered frightening in that culture. Some of the newer horror films and American remakes will make more sense afterwards. There is four stories, and they had a little bit of the feeling of the old Twilight Zone shows. The pace might be considered a bit slow and there isn't always a lot of dialogue (subtitled), but I really enjoyed it. My favorite one of course was the one about Hoichi (see cover). :).
Granted, I took a film studies course last summer that has given me a greater appreciation for films, so perhaps this is not for everyone (I might not even have liked it if I had seen it before).
Oh, and it's beautiful (although the friend I watched it with hated the painted backgrounds - especially in "The Woman of the Snow.".
