Review of Kaboom (2010) by Chad D — 02 Feb 2011
I had the privilege of attending a Sundance screening in New York with Greg Araki and Thomas Dekker doing a Q&A after. What I got from the Q&A was that Araki set out to make a film like Nowhere for this generation, in that aspect he succeeded.
After recent deviations like Mysterious Skin (which I have studied acknowledged as an overlooked masterpiece) and stoner epic Smiley Face, it's welcome return to form. But keep in mind, Nowhere and The Doom Generation are just silly, sexy and sometimes batshit insane movies.
In a way, this one is a little more wide eyed and optimistic in the face of inevitable and an unnecessary apocalypse, and the sex is hot, but I can't recommend this movie if you are not familiar with style of Nowhere.
Mainly because in this movie, no one turns into a bug and says "I'm outta here." That's the one thing this movie is missing, really.
