Review of In My Skin (2002) by Mec R — 08 Mar 2008
This movie was a disgusting, self-absorbed exploration of voyeuristic shock value. The one star I gave it is for the somewhat artistic cinematography. The only reason I stayed in the theater for the entire film was because I kept hoping it would have some point or get better.
I did not find it deep at all. In fact, as a mental health professional, I felt that it trivializes/fetishizes the plight of self-injurers in a way that turns them into zoo animals (or at best, anthropological oddities to be gawked at) rather than multidimensional human beings.
If you want to see a sensitive (but still erotic) portrait of a self-injurer, see "Secretary" instead of this overrated, self-referential, self-obsessed garbage.
