Review of If You Are the One (2008) by Mattias E — 26 Mar 2010
If You Are The One might be Feng Xiaogang's answer to critics bitching about how he keeps making fake attempts at epic-scale drama for a strictly Western market instead of quirky Chinese comedies. Then again, with it's subtle off-beat humour and characters carrying some heavy emotional baggage, Feng's latest movie will not likely satisfy those who long for a return to the old lighthearted holiday-comedy days.
Feng hardly plays his best cards with If You Are The One, but there is a dark edge to it with some cleverly camouflaged social satire added to the mix. Lu Yue's cinematography is of course stunning, in a Discovery Channel kinda way.
