Review of I Wake Up Screaming (1941) by Steen T — 10 Nov 2007
A promoter (Victor Mature) takes it upon himself to turn a nobody of a girl into a celebrity. When she's offered a movie contract and is about to leave for Hollywood, she's found murdered and the promoter becomes the prime suspect. However, the detective assigned to the case (a creepy Laird Cregar) is strangely obsessed about it, and the murdered girl's sister thinks she's seen the detective somewhere before...
This is an odd film that veers from almost romantic comedy to proto-typical noir, but Mature and Betty Grable (both playing against character) send out sparks whenever they share a scene, and the harsh black and white photography is stunning.
