Review of I Come with the Rain (2009) by Phil N — 27 Dec 2010
Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung (Cyclo, The Vertical Ray Of The Sun)returns after 9 years in the wilderness with this thriller about an ex-cop sent to Asia to look for a tycoon's missing son. As with a lot of multi-national hybrids (where all the characters speak English for our benefit) this gives mixed results - a somewhat confused narrative with religious symbolism and wildly uneven performances from its Asian stars (although Hartnett is good).
Yet on the plus side it's original and gripping and Tran's style captivates, plus it's got a fab soundtrack. Defiantly uncommercial but truly compelling viewing despite its many flaws.
