So extravagant on the production cost that it bankrupted a studio and trampled upon by critics upon release, calling it an unqualified disaster and the most scandalous cinematic waste, Michael Cimino's western that is based loosely on Wyoming's 1892 Johnson County War is epic in both grandeur and grandiloquence, and only with the passage of time will tell it is to be revered or ridiculed.
