Review of Fat City (1972) by Monique R — 28 Dec 2007
Fat City is the type of movie that makes you feel weird after you watch it. On the DVD case it says, "life is what happens inbetween rounds." I'd say thats pretty descriptive of the movie because it looks like it is about boxing but that is only a secondary aspect of the movie.
The main character is a guy who was once a decent boxer but has since become an alcoholic. He meets a woman at a bar who is also an alcoholic and his focus shifts to her. Susan Tyrell plays said alcoholic female and this is my favorite female performance of all time.
I think it's interesting that she is just as self destructive as he is but at the same time she is smart enough to realize that it isn't a good thing for them to be together. I think its a good portrayal of how feminism should be shown.
..Not a douche-y, one-sided, pride-driven argument but a complex statement that portrays women as complicated/important characters.
