Review of Bullet and Brain (2007) by Mattias E — 02 Apr 2010
Cinematographer and budding director Venus Keung gets dealt a pretty bad hand with Bullet & Brain. Not only does Wong Jing's screenplay suffer severely from it's own annoying pseudo-smartness, there are also budgetary issues that make B&B look incredibly cheap in spite of having three of Hong Kong's most expensive actors in the cast.
There's also the alienating effect of having events play out in an unnamed, and sort of futuristic, city instead of a familiar Hong Kong setting. Not to mention the amateurish dubbing and crappy mainland actors.
Regrettably, Bullet & Brain is just another example of how mainland China and Wong Jing, together and separately, seem intent on destroying what's left of Hong Kong cinema.
