Review of Alexander (2004) by Kyle C — 28 Sep 2009
Oliver Stone's film is so unappreciated, but that's probably because many people haven't seen the best version of the film. "Alexander Revisited", the third version released on DVD, is a superior film in all ways.
Colin Farrell gives a good performance as Alexander, and Anthony Hopkins' narration is very time-worn and ancient. The battle sequences are superbly done, and the historical story of Alexander is condensed, to show more through symbolism.
While it does have flaws (Angelina Jolie for one), "Alexander (Revisited)" is a masterpiece in terms of cinematography and soundtrack. The film looks like one of the epics (despite that it falls short of being a true epic), and certainly was better than "Gladiator", or "Troy" or "King Arthur".
Oliver Stone reached far to give us a great film, and though he failed to give us a great film, he certainly gave us a decent one.
