Review of Sadgati (1981)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

A chilling, assured film about how modern man has grown so far from nature that he's unsuited to its rigors…

Review of Breathless (1983)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

It's as innovative as it is entertaining. It's clever, hilarious, amazing... You just can't miss this…

Review of Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

I thought the original Halloween was overrated, the 2 or three cheapie sequels I've seen were even worse, and this new entry is still crap…

Review of Wonder Boys (2000)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

Yes, the film is often hilarious and surprisingly exciting, but it's really an expertly crafted, intelligent character piece, a mature film…

Review of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

Mewes is a strangely compelling lead, and that in itself is good reason enough to see the film…

Review of Romeo Must Die (2000)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

Way too much time is spent exposing the boring, conventional plot, with all its predictable twists and double-crossings…

Review of Nurse Betty (2000)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

Renee Zellwegger is the real star here, of course, and Greg Kinnear is very enjoyable too, but it's Chris Rock and Morgan Freeman that really…

Review of Waking Life (2001)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

You watch movies. A lot of movies. Some good, some not so good. Once in a while, you see one and you're like, whoa, now this is something else…

Review of Orange County (2002)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

It makes you want to see more of Hanks and Fisk, but overall it just isn't all that memorable. Worth a rental…

Review of Made (2001)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

As witty as Favreau's dialogue is and as engaging as the look and tone he gives the film are, I think what's most admirable is how generous…

Review of Gattaca (1997)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

This is a thought-provoking film, an effective wake-up call to those who glorify science…

Review of Keeping the Faith (2000)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

Smart, funny and touching, and there is enjoyable chemistry between the three leads…

Review of Changing Lanes (2002)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

A not-so-smart, Swiss cheese slice of a morality tale about utterly unlikable people doing dumb and/or despicable things…

Review of Ghost World (2001)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

It's one of the most genuine and smart films I've seen all year…

Review of Dolemite (1975)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

What's cool with a movie like Dolemite, a pure product of the everything goes 1970s, is how free and uninhibited it is…

Review of Ghostbusters (1984)

By Kevin N. Laforest (610) for Montreal Film Journal (589) on 09 Sep 2002

Murray and scribe Ramis defy all logic and turn it into a movie you'd want to watch over and over…
