Review of Zulu Dawn (1979) by Shawn W — 01 Jul 2010
Although being a prequel concerning events that happened just before 'Zulu', 'Zulu Dawn' is a completely different picture. Whilst 'Zulu' dealt with heroic acts (in an almost hopeless situation), 'Zulu Dawn' focuses on the pomp of the British Empire and ill-advised tactics, employed by the British army.
This awful military blunder saw 1,300 British massacred by 20,000 Zulu warriors. Despite having Burt Lancaster and Peter O'Toole, something seems to be missing, though it's hard to pin down exactly what.
The start is fairly ponderous, though you certainly get to learn a lot more about the Zulu wars as a whole.
