Review of Zulu (1964) by Pj P — 12 Jan 2008
Good stuff about what dickheads the British were and how brave the ordinary soldier (and how ignorant). Another film to make one ashamed of ones country if you're British. Nowhere in this film is it made clear that the British had just invaded Zululand and suffered a well-deserved defeat at Isandlwana.
But 'introducing Michael Caine' - history within history! Ironically when we first met Michael he had a posh accent old boy. The Zulus are wonderful, but typical of its time this movie allows no Zulu characters.
For goodness sake the British were the baddies! However this was the one of the last wars of aggression by them (they were of course to attack the Boer republics) until they joined the Americans in an unprovoked attack on Iraq much more recently.
