Review of Zulu (1964) by Nicholas S — 05 May 2008
One of the best war movies out there, but ironically its greatness lies in the narrow-ed down story. Very little is said about the actual war and the political conditions behind it - this is about one of the most epic, courageous battles ever fought. The entire movie is dedicated to the small group of Britsh soldiers holding the post against a massive Zulu army, a bloody battle witch depicts the excellent tactics, organization and courage that won it.
Some may hold its glorification of the battle against it, but whether people like to admit it or not, some of the highest human virtuous such as true heroism, unity and sacrifice can be found amidst the battlefield, no matter how terrible it might be. And this movie I felt glorified both set of cultures - the never-give-up defenders and the fearless Zulu warriors. The song at the end was a particularly grand and awe-inspiring moment.
This is how movies like this should be done.
