Review of Zulu (1964) by Mya G — 13 Dec 2008
This is everything a war movie should be and nothing that it shouldn't. The story is simple: a vastly-outnumbered British garrison have to defend their small outpost against a massive Zulu attack. There are no extraneous love interests, no bombastic declarations of patriotism, and no attempts to ram a "message" down your throat, just a steady, terrible building up of tension until the final battle.
The characters are sparsely but effectively sketched out (special mention to Nigel Green as Colour Sergeant Bourne) and the largely anonymous Zulu forces are menacing without being vilified. I'm not one to cry at movies, but I invariably choke up whenever I hear the defiant rendition of "Men of Harlech" intertwined with the Zulu chanting.
Fantastic stuff.
