Review of Zulu (1964) by Gavin S — 03 Aug 2012
Michael Caine's breakout role. A classic war film about a small British outpost being attacked by a much larger Zulu force. Stands up to time on the strength of the performances of Caine, Stanley Baker, James Booth, Jack Hawkins and nearly everyone else.
The scale is reinforced with sweeping shots, and the action is good, but it's the buildup of tension leading to the first Zulu attack that has the biggest impact. The message is simple enough, "why us"? asks one soldier, to which the Sgt replies "well who else is going to do it?" There's no basking in the glory of war or command, it's just a band of men sticking together and following their leader(s) to survival.
Still a great watch.
