Review of Zorba the Greek (1964) by Sepideh S — 22 Jun 2007
Look, too many people see this movie and think they get it because all they take from it is the tired metaphor of life being this joyous dance. Okay, great, so every Greek is a dancing Zorba. Ahhh, NO! The movie tells us what Kazantzakis knew decades before the rest us (hint: it's what happy people know).
Have I lost ya? Fine. Then watch the final sequence that looks at Zorba's failed venture. See his reaction? There's beauty in the attempt, people. The dance? It's crying; it's moving on; it pain; it's joy; it's love; it's friendship; it's all there.
