Review of Zootopia (2016) by Vectis99 — 17 Oct 2018
Zootopia is a beautifully animated and brilliantly cute film. However, it fails to communicate meaningful messages to younger audiences. More alarmingly though, Zootopia misrepresents the fundamental nature of racism and produces a story which is grossly irrelevant in the modern sense.
Zootopia ignores the institutional and structural ways in which racism is perpetuated in modern areas, instead presenting a sort of whitewashed 80s-era "we stopped hating people of color" mindset.
As Zootopia is marketed as a family movie, it's masterful production quality is largely dwarfed by its perpetuation of a destructive erasure of structural racism.
