Review of Zoolander (2001) by Allen G — 28 May 2013
Before Tropic Thunder and even before Dodgeball there was this- Probably Stiller's most known character (not that he has many others really!?) in a mind-numbing stupid film that's regularly funny and always plain weird.
Its a cameo-fest but a decent one at least (Bowie certainly makes up for Trump being in there) with near enough all of the recognisable members of Stiller's family appearing in there somewhere. With regards to the main cast, its your typical so;;y-comedy cast with Ferrell and Wilson, along with Stiller himself, all giving ridiculous performances that bring a smile to your face. Mila Jovovich is in there too which is interesting.
Its mostly going to appeal to young-teens I guess, I enjoyed it most then anyway but there's still some comedy there for any viewer I'd think. its generally not the kind of comedy that I enjoy but its done relatively well here and somehow manages to take itself less-seriously than just about any other film like it.
The story is clearly a second to the jokes here, you don't need to think too hard about what's going on, that's for sure. You have to through a lot of unfunny dumb to get to the worthwhile bits so it requires some patience. It never feels like proper satire here, just frat-boy humour, if this film came out tomorrow I'd hate it with a passion but it was a bit unique for its time and funnier than its counterparts so its not bad.
What it really needs was some script-smarts to go along with the stupid-humour, then we'd have got a great mix of comedy and general entertainment but this one clearly goes for the pun-a-plenty approach instead and offers a wacky but otherwise run-of-the-mill plot to go along with it.
