Review of Zoolander (2001) by David L — 29 Mar 2015
Another daft and mildly amusing contribution to the film industry from the usual suspects Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, and even a small cameo for Vince Vaughan. It has a fairly comical undertone to it thanks to the mocking of the fashion industry and the assumption that every model is as thick as £&@#! With the a-listers of comedy and a decent soundtrack to boot, it's a very watchable movie that isn't necessarily my cup of tea, but would provide a feast of giggles for teenagers in their prime.
It's a very stereotypical Stiller film, although not one of his best in my opinion as the crudeness and slapstick elements of Dodgeball rank that a lot higher in my eyes. The plot is very farfetched in that male models are being brainwashed into killing political figures and it has a hint of Austin Powers about it in that sense, only not as funny.
I was quite amazed at just how many star studded actors there were in this, many of whom have gone on to have their own lead roles in movies since. Even Milla Jovavich has a bit part here, but of course she's much more suited to the kick ass character Alice in the Resident Evil series.
These movies no matter how advertised and well received they are, always fail to impress me with their bog standard dumb American jokes, despite the odd moment which raises a giggle every now and then.
They are much of a muchness and although they're not offensive and mind numbingly boring, I could never appreciate them enough to warrant purchasing them or showcasing them amongst friends - is it because I'm too dumb to get the brunt of the jokes myself? I doubt it, as I'm certainly no male model, just a movie goer in search of some comedy originality and perhaps a bit of versatility from Mr Stiller.
