Review of Zoolander 2 (2016) by Joshua S — 24 Feb 2016
Despite enjoying recent long awaited sequels, such as Dumb and Dumber To and Anchorman: The Legend Continues, I still had my reservations about Zoolander 2. This was mostly due to the content. Would it still retain the same absurdity of the first one, or would it try to cater to the modern audience? Thankfully, the film is as crazy and absurd as the first one.
Zoolander 2 finds Derek and Hansel wrapped up in an international conspiracy that is killing off good looking pop stars. Everyone involved, all the way down to the writers, seems to understand and get the joke.
Even Benedict Cumberbatch runs with it in his brief cameo. This is a good thing, because the film would've collapsed in on itself if they didn't go all out. The acting is pretty solid, with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson stepping back into their designer shoes like they never even left.
There are a few callbacks to the original, but going in blind to them makes them even better. And Will Ferrell is back, and he looks like he's having a blast. The jokes comes fast and easy, which pushes things along smoothly, up until it hits a roadblock for about ten minutes, which is a real buzz kill.
Fortunately, the film goes full speed ahead after that and finishes in a flourish of hilarious stupidity. And when I left the theater, I was exceptionally happy with this long awaited sequel.
