Review of Zoolander 2 (2016) by Ash S — 28 May 2016
A perfect example of why sequels to comedies should be banned from being produced, Zoolander 2 is a hysteric, uninspired, unfunny and totally disastrous continuation of the 2001 original. Without the original, sarcastic take on the pop-industry, the second installment has nothing to offer except for several cameos of pop-stars and very limited amount of laughs.
More than a decade after the first movie, both top-models Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) have to team-up and forget old issues in order to re-light the fire of their careers while helping the beautiful Valentina Valencia (Penelope Cruz) solve the mystery of who is killing pop-stars around the world. Ben Stillers's movie tries to be bigger, noisier and better than its predecessor, but without the typical satire the whole production is just an annoying and painful to see kitsch. It surely tries to bring more of what made Zoolander a provoking and somehow passable comedy, but the scattered plot, irritating performances and lack of fun, doom the sequel to be one of the worst movies of 2016 so far.
If you have seen the original movie and you liked it, probably you could give Zoolander 2 a change. Unfortunately, you will have to lower your expectations in advance, otherwise, you will be completely disappointed with all the 102 minutes.
