Review of Zoolander 2 (2016) by Kenneth M — 29 Jun 2017
This is probably the dumbest movie of 2016... and it's all the more awesome for it. I must, of course, begin with the disclaimer that I am a huge fan of the first film. And I will wager that if you are too, you will also enjoy this one.
I can't say I loved it as much as the original, but I really liked it and it kept me laughing the whole way through. This movie is not quite as satirical as the first, but it maintains the same absurdist humor that the made the first one such a joy.
The entire film is brimming with an unprecedented amount of celebrity cameos, many of which are totally unexpected and all of which are funny. The best of them is unquestionably Benedict Cumberbatch's hysterical turn as the gender-neutral "All", whose few minutes of screen time alone are worth the price of admission.
I can't even think about his scenes without laughing. The movie does get bogged down with too much story in the second half (c'mon folks, we don't watch a movie like this for the story!), but it's still a really funny film that is a worthy follow-up to the cult classic.
This movie isn't for everyone, but if you enjoy silly parodies, you will probably like it... maybe not as much as I did, but definitely enough to justify the rental.
