The romance isn't great (particularly when it involved negging); "Hitch" was far better. Just once, I'd like to see a story where two friends of the opposite sex can help each other out on dates without becoming a couple, e.g. if one wants children and the other doesn't so they know that they don't have a future together.
As for the animals, it needed a bit more than the concept of "Hey, look, they're being sarcastic and using slang!".
Still, there were some funny scenes, and the sub-plot with the gorilla was far better than the main plot.
