Review of Zombie Strippers! (2008) by Robert W — 29 Jul 2009
I suffered through the first 17 minutes. I couldn't tell if it was the actors, the script, the directing, or the tired digs on an old administration. It just wasn't working for me. Then Robert Englund got introduced, and things picked up quite a bit.
I rather enjoyed all the references to existential philosophy. But ultimately, a film like this is watched for it's eye candy. It's served up in three flavors: Impossibly Sexy Strippers; Bloody Zombies; and the fusion of the two. The girls up there showed some real talent, and the scene where a guy gets his jaw ripped off during a lap dance was very impressive.
The cringe-inducing moments compare favorably to those in Sam Raimi's film "Drag Me to Hell". The comedy of this is greatly enhanced by how germaphobic Robert Englund's character is, especially in an end scene where he is "treated" to a two zombie-stripper-show.
In fairness to the actors portraying the soldiers in the beginning, I noticed a much better performance from them toward the end of the film. I got the vibe that the opening sequence must have been thrown together on a shoestring's shoestring and they didn't get much time for rehearsals and repeat takes.
Do take a look at the deleted scenes and the commentary.
