Review of Zodiac (2007) by Ryan P — 26 Mar 2013
It still has to rely on slasher conventions to stay interesting between the dialogue-based thrills but it's still far from an unnecessary blood-fest, it's actually a compelling study of the fear and terror that gripped society at the time and the frustration of unrewarded obsession and dedication and the effect that that has on the human mind.
The case of the Zodiac killer has both fascinated and haunted me for years and I was very sceptical upon this film's release through fear that it would simply use the story to make yet another terrible thriller movie. Thankfully, that was not the case and I've now seen the film countless times (okay, 4) and it still engages and interests me fully.
It's sticks to the story a little too much and certainly comes off like a documentary-movie in many ways and this combined with the film's fair length and dialogue-based drama could lead to viewers who don't have much of an interest in the true-events losing interest in this film also.
I enjoy it though and even if the story doesn't satisfy you, this is still a strong collection of interesting character studies with strong performances to push them forward.
