Review of Zodiac (2007) by Neil S — 04 May 2014
When I heard that the killer is never caught, I was hesitant to watch this film. But all and sundry kept raving about it, so I sat down one afternoon and did. Wow! Fincher really is a master filmmaker and knows just how to toy with the viewer's expectations, yet also keep you engrossed without alienating you by pulling too many tricks or disappointing you.
Most serial killer thrillers are all about catching the illusive criminal, but this one effortlessly diverts your attention to the people actually trying to catch him, and how the lack of answers becomes an all-consuming obsession.
This may sound like the film is a chore to watch, but Fincher still creates unbearable tension from the sense that the killer could still attack at any time, especially when cartoonist Jake Gyllenhaal starts putting himself in hair-raising situations.
Give this film a chance, and it's realism, slow-burn intensity and sense of dread will stay with you.
