Review of Zodiac (2007) by Lachlan D — 14 Jun 2014
David Fincher brings a wonderful energy to this truly enthralling story seamlessly scripted by Vanderbilt. What makes Zodiac one of the greatest films ever is the fact that it is so successful in blending different tones and genre conventions.
How do you define the film; a period drama, a dark comedy, a psychological thriller, a mystery, a horror or a police procedural? It's all of the above; the film should have been an incoherent mess but it's not, as it manages to make all of these components work together and complement each other.
To go along with the fantastic character development are terrific performances from the entire cast. Fincher definitely knows how to direct his actors and this serves the rapport the film establishes between the characters and the viewer, especially the nervous and naive Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal).
Boy are there some moments that really get under your skin (I'm never going into a basement again!). Also worth a nod is the production design; just awesome.
