Review of Zodiac (2007) by Matthew D — 09 Oct 2018
A murder mystery masterpiece.
Zodiac (2007) is director David Fincher's finest film. It is a relentless case study and police investigation into the Zodiac killings of the 1960s-1970s. The direction is full of long slow panning shots that keep you on edge. The fun music keeps you at ease while you bear witness to detailed recreations of heinous murders. The pounding music will eat away at you while you try to follow alongside these detectives, reporters, and hobbyists at uncovering the identity of The Zodiac Killer.
Jake Gyllenhaal leads the fray as a cartoonist that is interested in reading, riddles, puzzles, and conundrums. His manic portrayal is fascinating and intriguing as you relate to this average man trying to do the right thing. Mark Ruffalo is quite sympathetic as the detective in charge of the Zodiac case. His frustrations become yours as his leads give you hope as well. Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious as the journalist invested in the Zodiac killings and head target. This leading cast along keeps you alert, on edge, and engaged at every moment of Zodiac's lengthy running time. You never feel the time pass as you are mesmerized by this gripping true story.
I cannot recommend Zodiac enough. Fincher may never outdo this epic investigative film. Zodiac is a beast unto itself. The long length encompasses so much time and information, but Zodiac helps you along and keeps everything in order. I found Fincher's sense of suspense and intrigue completely entertaining throughout Zodiac. If you have never seen Zodiac, you are in for a wild time. You'll hold your breath as Zodiac takes it away!
