Review of Zhou Yu's Train (2002) by John C — 05 Jan 2005
Zhou Yu's Train is a beautiful but confounding love story about a young girl caught between two suitors. One is a poet (with all the standard character baggage that comes with being a poet) the other is a vetinarian who lives an average, steady life.
Guess who she chooses? The film's plot is rather straight forward and the film itself shouldn't be that hard to follow but the way the director organizes the scene sequences is so confounding that the viewer is left wondering what is going on for much of the movie.
The scenes of Chinese country-side are wonderfully shot and interesting to look at. Beyond that, however, the film gives you a headache.
