The world's greatest detective is great because in conjunction with a vast intellect (knowledge base and reasoning skills), he remains totally disconnected from the world, to stay objective. In an attempt to chronicle his methods for solving mysteries, he loses his objectivity and becomes a part of a larger world and Pullman masterfully acts as if he is a socially defective detective who is pretending to be a normal person.
