Review of Zero Effect (1998) by Hugh M — 04 Jan 2010
In some ways I could relate to the bill Pullman character. I found the theories about social dynamics and interaction quite interesting indeed. In some ways the movie tends to over complicate itself.
A very interesting and obscure film made in the late 90?s. This is probably the forgotten or lost Ben stiller movie. The film is mainly about a private detective with brilliant observational skills, regarding humans and their behaviour dynamics, patterns and habits.
In contrast to this he is somewhat gauche in larger society when not working on a case.
Some very humorous moments, and perhaps a qausi look at some of the personality traits of someone with autism or similar affliction Ben stiller plays a fairly straight and narrow role, safe, but well done- there is some complexity to the character so it?s good to see it?s not too linear. A detailed yet easy to follow storyline that is quite cohesive and well played from the first to third acts, without major trouble or glitches. Some scenes in the movie remain slightly too long.
