Review of Zero Dark Thirty (2012) by Olli H — 15 Aug 2014
In 2011 Osama Bin Laden was killed by Navy S.E.A.L. team and America danced in the streets. In "Zero Dark Thirty" we see how this came to be through the eyes of a CIA agent/analyst Maya (Jessica Chastain) and while the main story is about finding Bin Laden, we also get to see a story of pure obsession and with Jessica Chastain's pale, weary & no-nonsense Maya we also get an excellent performance. The movie suffers a bit of the political influence (the movie got greenlight about a month or something after Bin Laden was killed) and it is quite lenghty but with the sudden change of storytelling in the third act breaks the analytic thriller and turns in to a showcase of modern warfare, where soldiers take 30 second breaks to tell others who they killed. It is both sad and interesting thing to see.
But in the end, "Zero Dark Thirty" shows that while in a grand scale killing Bin Laden was an "achievement", in personal scale it ended the 10 year manhunt and also purpose for some people's very existance.
