Review of Zero (2018) by Yash B — 25 Dec 2018
For me, "Zero" is 2018's most underrated Bollywood movie. The movie isn't without some problems, but I couldn't help but fall for the movie's charisma and enormous heart. The movie has an outstanding first half but unfortunately becomes far less interesting in the second.
This feels like the film's greatest strength and weakness. I also feel that there is just too much in this movie and the abundance of themes the movie tries to presents makes it feel overcrowded. The direction the story ends up taking becomes pretty outlandish and the sense of semi-realism created by the first half is virtually gone by the end of the movie.
Despite these flaws, I enjoyed this movie thoroughly. The story kept me engaged and the performances from Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma are both very good and memorable. It's a lighthearted feel-good movie that I feel is getting much more hate than it deserves.
Overall, it's implausible beyond belief and overstuffed with storylines, yet somehow the movie's solid humor, genuine heart, and great performances kept me consistently entertained.
