Review of Zelig (1983) by Morgan O — 07 May 2008
I will quite happily admit that Woody Allen is a genius and a cinematic giant, who has had an unbelievable impact in the development of film as an artform.
Saying that however, I just plain get bored when I watch his films.
I think, in terms of plot and character development, he's a one-trick pony in the same vein as Judd Apatow.
Saying that, 'Zelig' is kinda the exception to the rule, as it features a really neat photo-montage form of narrative and an intricate central protagonist who can be anyone.
I was really digging this right up until it became just another cliched Allen flick, where a gorgeous woman falls inexplicably in love with his hugely annoying persona.
Ugh.
Despite this, its relatively short running time means that it never becomes too unbearable.
Overall, its up there with 'Annie Hall' and 'Match Point' as my favourite Allen films.
