Review of Zelig (1983) by Dave A — 08 Jul 2008
Woody Allen's best film of the 80s is a mock-documentary about "Zelig", the chameleon man (played by Allen) who turns into whoever he is taking to. The film mixes genuine footage from the 20s and 30s with fake footage, and sometimes modern bits are inserted into the old footage (love the shots of Hitler with Woody Allen in the background). Cameras and lenses from the 20s and 30s were used and the film damaged and scratched so that it is often difficult to tell which bits are genuine footage and which bits are fake...
Psychiatrist Dr. Fletcher (Mia Farrow) takes Zelig into seclusion to study him and find his true self, but, of course, Zelig turns into a psychiatrist and starts analysing her...
It is very silly, yet genuinely intriguing... Utterly original; should be better known.
