Review of Zebraman (2004) by Issam S — 26 Jun 2008
Now, this wasn't a terribly bad idea. If anyone could make an outlandish superhero spoof, it would be Takeshi Miike. But due to it's long running time, the jokes gets old pretty damn fast. There's a few parts in the film where it might draw a few snickers (see the Zebranurse scene), but since there's about 2 hours to tell a story that would normally take 45 minutes, they really push it here by filling the rest of the film up with really bad slapstick and cheesy dialog.
This is truly what happens when one reads too much manga or watches too much kaiju TV. Sure, maybe that's the "point" to Miike's satire, but someone like myself can only take so much.
It's also greatly missing that Miike energy that he has brought to so many of his other films when it's a movie that could really use it.
