Review of Zabriskie Point (1970) by Andrejs P — 30 Aug 2010
I've watched a few antonioni movies (la notte, blow up, l'aventurra) so I thought i'd check this one out. if you can get past the first 45 minutes or so, its worth a watch, but of the 4 i've seen, its probably 3rd in line (didnt really like blow up too much).
The first part of the movie is about these radical college hippy wanna be's who pretty much want to do shit their own way and not follow the rules and protest and beat up some cops for whatever reason that is never disclosed. pretty lame. where the movie gets interesting is when the hippy (who disagrees with the wanna be hippies and black radicals at his college) meets up with this hot chick in the desert at what looks to be death valley....i think zabriskie point is in death valley if memory serves correct. anyway, they roll around in the sand for a while, do some drugs and have sex. along with a bunch of other hippies, although I dont believe this is meant to be taken literally. I think what its meant to be understood that these hippies are making the desert come to life (as they approach the point he mentions how dead the desert is), like they are trying to bring america to life and not so robotic or some shit like that.
The ending is pretty good I must admit and the sountrack is pretty good as well with some floyd and jerry garcia tunes. also the cinematography at times is quite captivating. worth a watch if you are into antonioni or the hippy movement failure.
