Review of Z for Zachariah (2015) by Patrick W — 30 Aug 2015
Danger! My advice to you, if you have read the book Z is for Zachariah stay away from the movie. The movie and the book should not share the same name. Modi tries to be clever by tempting those familiar with the book version of Loomis with situations that are pure evil but twisted to a harmless end that might be a tool to make one feel guilty about preconcieved notions of Loomis.
If you have never read the book you might enjoy the movie but I am sure if you are savy will find it incomplete. It is nice to see a role for Margot Robbie where she is not a sex object....oops too late. Her character does not stay true to the source material or to the what she has been established to be unless you consider her Eve of post apocalyptic Garden of Eden. The tension that should exist is lacking and Zobel did not push the uncomfortableness that he was so good at in Compliance. Ejiofor does a fine job but his character is missing an identity unless he is drunk. Chris Pine is a sexy man when wet and bathed in moonlight. once again his character is missing part of its makeup. The 2 males seem to be a shattered shallow composite of the antagonist from the book without the antagonism. The ending is a mindbender depending on how you look at the world.
I have 5 major issues with the movie. I need to watch it again to make sure I am right.
